Conclusion:

In the modern age, the computers have brought many changes in our

lifestyles.Computers and its uses grew rapidly and widely throughout the world. The

impact of computer usage on our life obviously identified as savings of money, time

and effort.

Unit: 2 ( Portable Computer/General features of OS)

Q. 2 What are the limitations of portable computers? Do you think students should

be allowed to use computer in class? (5m)

The computers that are designed to be placed from one place to another and

includes a display and keyboard, are called portable computers. By their nature,

portable computers are generally known as microcomputers. Portable computing

started in 1981, when Adam Osborne introduced his CP/M-based business computer

called the Osborne I.

Limitations of a portable computer:

They have a lower specification than most desktop systems.

They are less user- friendly and are less suited for full-time usage in most of the

cases.

Expansion is tough and any repair could prove costly.

Most of portable computers are not upgradeable.

Conclusion:

The computers are becoming more popular for home use and outside works.

Modern-day technologies have changed the dynamics of our lives. It depends on the

user as to how they can make the use of technology.

.

Q.3 What is an operating system? What are it's major functions? (5m)

An operating system is a software that works as an interface between a

user and the computer hardware. The primary objective of an operating

system is to make computer system convenient to use and to utilize

computer hardware in an efficient manner. The major functions of OS are

cited below:

1.Process Management:

a) Process Scheduling

b) Keeps status of process

c) Interprocess communication

2. Memory Management

a) Managing free space

b) Allocating and deallocating memory for process

c) Managing virtual memory

3. File Management:

b) Defining file structure

c) Storing and handling files

4. Device Management:

a) Handling input and output

b) Handling Errors

Conclusion:

The operating system not only perform the above mentioned functions but

also provide proper authentication and authorization to computer system

and its resources for security and protection.

Q. 4. How operating system is transferred to internal memory? (5m)

Operating System is a piece of software that controls all our computer

resources while the computer is in use. Often people have questions like

where the operating system is stored on the computer or how it is being

used by CPU? Someone says it is stored in RAM while other says it is on the

hard disk.

RAM (Random Access Memory) is the volatile memory space that stores

the data which is directly accessed by CPU (Central Processing Unit). The

data/software access from the RAM is much faster than the access from

the hard disk, so computer’s speed directly depends on the RAM as if there

is higher memory space in the RAM, it will reduce the time to read data

from hard disk. But since it is volatile, as soon as computer is turned off,

the data stored in the RAM.

Conclusion:

In computers, Operating System is installed and stored on the hard disk.

As hard disk is a non volatile memory, OS does not lose on the turn off. But

as the data access from the hard disk is very, slow just after the computer

is started OS is copied into RAM from the hard disk.

Unit: 6 (Computer Networks/Network Configuration)

Q.11 Write a summary of the text "Computer Network"

The text entitled " Computer Network " presents important information about

various types of computer networks and their uses as well. Computer networks link

computers by communication lines and software protocols, allowing data to be

exchanged rapidly and reliably. There are three types of computer networks described

in the text are explained below:

1. LAN ( Local Area Network)

Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a

small area such as building, office.

LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers through a

communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc.

It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, network

adapters, and ethernet cables.

The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network.

In the 1980s, at least 100,000 LANS were set up in laboratories and offices

around the world. During the early part of this decade, synchronous orbit

satellites lowered the price of long-distance telephone calls, enabling

computer data and television signals to be distributed more cheaply around

the world. Since then, fibre-optic cable has been installed on a large scale,

enabling vast amounts of data to be transmitted at a very high speed using

light signals.

2. WAN (Wide Area Network)

A Wide Area Network is a network that extends over a large geographical

area such as states or countries.

A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN.

A Wide Area Network is not limited to a single location, but it spans over a

large geographical area through a telephone line, fibre optic cable or

satellite links.

The internet is one of the biggest WAN in the world.

A Wide Area Network is widely used in the field of Business, government,

and education.

3. Distributed Network System

Distributed networking, used in distributed computing, is the network system

over which computer programming, software, and its data are spread out

across more than one computer.

Distributed networks and processing work together to deliver specialized

applications to different remote users. This means that an application may be

hosted and executed from single machine but accessed by many others.

Dear Sir,

It is informed that our college was using Epson Photocopiers which are no longer adequate to meet

all our needs. They are about 15 years old and they lack versatility. Moreover, they get interrupted

frequently and need major repairs. This year alone we had to spend Rs. 20,000 to keep them in

working order.

With the increment in the size of four teaching departments and consequent increase in the

number of both faculty and students, the load of work has gone up considerably. Our estimates

show that we now require at least five more photocopiers to meet the present day demands. In

Unit: 4 (Programming and Programming Languages)

Q.8 Write a summary of the text ' Programming and Programming

Languages'. (10m)

A programming language is a set of commands, instructions, and other

syntax use to create a software program. In other words, A programming

language is a computer language programmers use to develop software

programs, scripts, or other sets of instructions for computers to

execute. Some major programming languages have been described below:

FORTRAN acronym for FORmula TRANslation. This language is used for

solving scientific and mathematical problems. It consists of algebraic

formulae and English phrases. It was first introduced in the United States in

1954.

COBOL acronym for COmmon Business-Oriented Language. This language

is used for commercial purposes. COBOL, which is written using English

statements, deals with problems that do not involve a lot of mathematical

calculations. It was first introduced in 1959.

ALGOL acronym for ALGOrithmic Language. Originally called IAL, which

means International Algebraic Language. It is used for mathematical and

scientific purposes. ALGOL was first introduced in Europe in 1960.

BASIC acronym for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code.

Developed in 1965 at Dartmouth College in the United States for use by

students who require a simple language to begin programming.

C Programming language is used for developing firmware or portable

applications. Originally intended for writing system software, C was

developed at Bell Labs by Dennis Ritchie for the Unix Operating System in

the early 1970s.The program produced after the source program is

converted into machine code is referred to as an object program or object

module. This is done by a computer program called the compiler. For

example, in order that an IBM RS/6000 may process a program in

FORTRAN, it needs to have a compiler that would understand that

particular model and the FORTRAN language as well. The compiler is a

system program which may be written in any language, but the computer's

operating system is a true systems program which controls the central

processing unit (CPU), the input, the output, and the secondary memory

devices.

Conclusion:

The main purpose of programming languages is to provide instructions to

a computer. As such, programming languages differ from most other forms

of human expression. Many new programming languages are being

created as per the needs of computer users like C++, javascript and python,

etc.

Unit: 5 (Computer Software)

Q.9 Mary Evans, Gerry Harper, Matt Andrews and Bob Bolton are well

known software developers. Do you think software purchasers are

getting what they need? What are their views about giving a better

product to purchase? (10 m)

In the text entitled 'Computer Software', the four software developers

have presented their own views about the computer software.

Mary Evans thinks that people are getting what they want- there are a lot

of creative things being done with paint software, word processing. DTP

(desktop publishing) systems, and so on.The computer is an incredibly

powerful tool, and any software that makes it easier, faster, more creative,

or more cost-effective will inevitably be in demand. But she is generally

optimistic about the way things are going at the moment. She thinks most

of the major software manufacturers are able to read the market quite

well.

According to Gerry Harper, software purchasers are getting the technical

support they need. While the products are getting more and more

complex, and more and more expensive, it seems that support is starting

to be thought of as an additional business opportunity. He thinks that

applications are getting too big, and that they're trying to do too much.

Yes, they're versatile and powerful, but they're also often .He wants simple

little programs that are easy to understand and use, and that work

together to accomplish more complex tasks.'

Matt Andrews doesn't agree with them.He tells that we can't stop

progress. Suppliers know what their customers want - they just can't

supply it quickly enough. He has studied the market very closely, and has

found that purchasers' needs seem always to exceed the capability of the

available software by a constant time-frame of about six to twelve

months."

Bob Bolton thinks that users are getting what they want. provided that

their needs fit the off-the-shelf application. Specialized software is usually

so specific that it should be written in-house for businesses. Developers

should add features that the customer needs, not what they think

customers want. Some effort should be made to get s feedback from the

users before making an upgrade so that the proper features are added.

Unit:6 ( Computer Networks)

Q.10 Write a summary of the text "Computer Network"

The text entitled " Computer Network " presents imortant information about

various types of computer networks and their uses as well. Computer networks link

computers by communication lines and software protocols, allowing data to be

exchanged rapidly and reliably. There are three types of computer networks described

in the text are explained below:

1. LAN ( Local Area Network):

 Local Area Network is a group of computers connected to each other in a small

area such as building, office.

 LAN is used for connecting two or more personal computers through a

communication medium such as twisted pair, coaxial cable, etc.

 It is less costly as it is built with inexpensive hardware such as hubs, network

adapters, and ethernet cables.

 The data is transferred at an extremely faster rate in Local Area Network.

In the 1980s, at least 100,000 LANS were set up in laboratories and offices around the

world. During the early part of this decade, synchronous orbit satellites lowered the

price of long-distance telephone calls, enabling computer data and television signals

to be distributed more cheaply around the world. Since then, fibre-optic cable has

been installed on a large scale, enabling vast amounts of data to be transmitted at a

very high speed using light signals.

2 . WAN (Wide Area Network)

A Wide Area Network is a network that extends over a large geographical area such

as states or countries.A Wide Area Network is quite bigger network than the LAN.

a) A Wide Area Network is not limited to a single location, but it spans over a

large geographical area through a telephone line, fibre optic cable or satellite

links.

b) The internet is one of the biggest WAN in the world.A Wide Area Network is

widely used in the field of Business, government, and education.

3. Distributed Network System

a. Distributed networking, used in distributed computing, is the network system

over which computer programming, software, and its data are spread out

across more than one computer.

b. Distributed networks and processing work together to deliver specialized

applications to different remote users. This means that an application may be

hosted and executed from single machine but accessed by many others.

Q.11 Write a summary of the text "Computer Viruses.” (10m)

The text entitled,"Computer Viruses" presents the important information

about the computer viruses and its functions and more.

The computer virus - an unwanted program that has entered your system

without you knowing about it. It has two parts- the infector and the

detonator. They have two very different jobs. One of the features of a

computer virus that separates it from other kinds of computer program is

that it replicates itself, so that it can spread (via floppies transported from

computer to computer, or networks) to other computers. After the

infector has copied the virus elsewhere, the detonator performs the virus's

main work. Generally, that work is either damaging data on your disks,

altering what you see on your computer display, or doing something else

that interferes with the normal use of your computer.

Here's an example of a simple virus, the Lehigh virus. The infector portion

of Lehigh replicates by attaching a copy of itself to COMMAND.COM (an

important part of DOS), enlarging it by about 1000 bytes. Once it has

infected four copies of COMMAND.COM, the detonator is activated. The

detonator in Lehigh is a simple one. It erases a vital part of the hard disk,

making the files on that part of the disk no longer accessible. Many viruses

have spread through pirated - illegally copied or broken - games. This is

easy to avoid. Pay for your games, fair and square. If you use a shared PC

or a PC that has public access, such as one in a college PC lab or a library,

be very careful about putting floppies into that PC's drives without a writeprotect

tab.

Conclusion:

To protect computer from the viruses, the little common sense and the

occasional virus are essential. The users should also stay away from pirated

software and putting floppies in publicly available PCs.

Q.13 What do you understand by network configuration? Discuss its

types. (10m)

A network configuration (topology) is the process of arranging the

devices like computers for transmitting voice, audio, data, files and other

items of information. Both the software and hardware are systematically

placed with other essential requirements.

There are four types of network configuration. They are discussed as

follows:

Ring Network Configuration:

It is a network configuration where device connections create a circular

data path.

Each networked device is connected to two others, like points on a

circle.

In a ring network, packets of data travel from one device to the next

until they reach their destination. Most ring topologies allow packets to

travel only in one direction.

Star Network Configuration:

Star topology is a network setup for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which

all nodes are individually connected to a central connection point, like a

hub or a switch.

The main advantages of a star network is that one malfunctioning node

does not affect the rest of the network.

Bus Network Configuration:

Bus topology is a network type in which every computer and network

device is connected to a single cable.

It transmits the data from one end to another in a single direction.

Switched Network Configuration:

 It is a kind of network setup in which a telephone exchange works as a

central switch.

 It is used to connect multiple devices on the network directly. The two

devices can communicate without the interference from other devices

when the link is established.

Conclusion:

Computer Network Topology has many advantages and

disadvantages. Each system has its own features. The use of it depends

upon the area where it is used.

Q.14 What are the positive aspects and negative aspects of replacing
